Before and after

TB Mare –The result of 12 months of regular farriercare.

Same foot 8 months later.

The path to Barefoot

The easiest option is of course to never shoe a horse in the first place. When a youngster goes off to school simply leave it barefoot. When it comes back freshly broken in, stick to an exercise program that conditions the feet to the work as well as the body and mind.

However most people turning to barefoot do so because of "irreparable" (with conventional shoeing) problems with their horses' feet or issues with farriers, expense, lost shoes and the subsequent downtime.

The Benefits of Barefoot

Barefoot trimming returns the deformed and weakened foot to a state of normality and health.

If you have issues such as the one’s listed below, then having correctly trimmed bare feet will aid in the correction of them or may even solve the problem entirely.

You may find you also need to address other deficiencies in their lifestyle and diet to get a full “cure” but well trimmed bare feet are a very good starting point.

What is Barefoot?

Simply – Barefoot trimming simulates the wear a normal healthy foot receives during exercise on varied terrain.

If we gave our horses enough exercise on hard enough terrain we wouldn't need to trim at all.
